Meet ‘Banksie’: The Mystery Artist Using Our Textile Banks as a Canvas

At Envirofriendly Recycling (EMEA) Ltd, we’re used to turning unloved clothing into something with a second life – whether that’s wearable, reusable or just too good to send to landfill (and we don’t send anything to landfill – everything we gather is reused or recycled). But recently, something (or rather, someone) has taken repurposing to a whole new level.

Over in Hessle, four of our distinctive textile banks have been given an unexpected makeover…courtesy of an anonymous street artist with undeniable talent. Think spray cans, stencils and sharp social commentary. Think Banksy — but Hull-style. So, naturally, we’ve affectionately dubbed them Banksie.

The artwork is bold, thought-provoking and genuinely well-executed. And while we can’t condone painting on private property – even if it’s a bin with purpose – we also can’t ignore the fact that this unknown creator has serious skill. As far as unsolicited public art goes, it’s pretty spectacular.

To be clear: we love creativity, but we also love keeping our textile banks clean and in good condition so the public can easily access them. Vandalism, no matter how artistic, is still illegal. But hey, Banksie – if you’re reading this – maybe channel that flair into something more collaborative? We’d love to chat.

In the meantime, our mission rolls on: collecting unwanted clothing across Hull and East Yorkshire, preventing textile waste, supporting local jobs and giving back to charities through donations from every bank we host.

Art on the outside. Heart on the inside. That’s just how we do it.
